Keeping care of your fascias

Fascias are an essential part of the outside of any building, although it is most likely that you are not consciously aware of their existence, unless you are involved in the building trade. Nevertheless, this does not diminish how important they are and in order to keep any building in working order, they need to be properly maintained.

Fascias run underneath the guttering of a building. You will never find any building anywhere without fascias, although it is possible for some buildings to be built without guttering, depending on their purpose and their location. The primary function of fascias is to keep guttering secure, meaning that the rain water that runs into the guttering does not leak down the sides of the house and is siphoned away.

Fascias can become damaged in many different ways. Often the rain water itself will damage them if they are made of wood, since this could lead to rotting. In the case of wood fascias, maintenance is especially important and care should be taken to adequately protect the wood while looking out for signs of rotting.

If your fascias are damaged, no matter what the material, it is essential that you do not simply just paint over or otherwise cover up the damage. When damage has occurred, the fascias are more prone to further degradation occurring while they are unable to carry out their function effectively, putting the fabric of your building at risk.

Plastic fascias are becoming increasingly popular these days as they have a longer lifetime than wood and need less maintenance due to an absence of rotting problems. They are also cheaper and easier to handle, which is especially an advantage in the case of fascias on homes.
