Credit Card: A Customer's Experience

Are credit cards a boon or a bane to the consumers? There are many incidents where credit cards had saved as well as ruined the lives of consumers. Past data has proved that it depends on the life style of an individual and the way he or she spends money. I will narrate an incident that had happened to me because of credit card without even using one.

The first incident happened two years ago, while I was in Kerala. It was during my semester vacation. I was studying in Chennai. To keep in contact with my friends in Chennai, I asked one of my schoolmates to get me an Airtel prepaid connection as the tariff for national messages was the lowest in Airtel prepaid. If I use my Chennai number, I have to pay extra money for calls and messages, because my number was in roaming. The friend of mine was doing a part time business of selling prepaid sim cards and recharge cards for his pocket money. Since I had no id proof, this was the easiest way. He got this number by giving some unknown id proofs and I can use this number when I come home for vacation.

Once during my semester holiday I got a call from XYZ Bank. The Bank Officer asked for Raji. I told him sorry, wrong number. After telling it, I was about to disconnect the call. Then he asked me is this Rajesh? (Rajesh is the husband of Raji). I told him that you have dialed the wrong number; please check the number you have dialed. Then he told me that he knows that I am Rajesh. In a serious tone, I told him that there is no one by the name ‘Raji' or ‘Rajesh' here. He then apologized and introduced himself as an officer from XYZ bank, and a Lady name ‘Raji' had made huge purchases using her credit card and have not made any payments towards that. She had given my number as contact number. I told him that I have been using this number for the last 4 years and I use this number only when I am at home. I am doing my engineering degree in Chennai. As if to scare me he told that, they are going to initiate police complaint against Raji and will be giving this number to the police. I told him that I have no problem and this will only affect the reputation of your bank. If your present customers and the other future customers of yours come to know about this, they will either feel unsecure to deposit money in your bank. If cunning customers like ‘Raji' or ‘Rajesh' came to know about it, they will take this opportunity to do the same or take personal loans and vanish with your money. It is your money so you can proceed, as you like. He warned me by saying that we will be meeting soon.

With that, he kept the call. After two days, I got a call from the Police and they asked me to report to the nearest police station, as they need to get some information from me. I told them that I have some important work to be done, so I will report at the police station by 11:30am. They agreed and cut the call. I understood that it is related to the Credit card issue. I called up one of my friend who is a very influential person in Kerala Politics and told him about my problem. He readily agreed to come with me as we were very good friends from our school day. He told me to go inside the police station inside first, as he wants to know why they called me. He assured me that no need to worry as the police personal in that station is very close to me and we will come in after 20-30 minutes.

My friend was waiting outside the police station while I entered the police station. I told the police personal at the entrance that I got a call and that is why I came here. I think he was aware of my visit based on his response. He pointed to a door and told me to meet that police officer. That officer was well prepared. He started behaving in a rough way and started boasting about himself. My friend who was waiting outside was listening to everything as I made a call to his number and kept the phone in my pocket before entering the police station. The officer is talking as if I was the one who did the crime.

That instance, my friend entered into that room. The officer got up from his chair, greeted my friend and offered him a seat. I was surprised to see the treatment he got from the police officer who was treating me badly. He told the officer that he had come along with me, and asked him how we can solve his problem. He said it is nothing big; it is just a formal enquiry and I can leave now, as the enquiry is over.

I came to know from my friend that the bank has arranged to treat me badly at the police station. This is how most of the banks behave when their customers does not repay the money they have borrowed. In my case, I do not have an account in XYZ bank or any other bank, but still I had problems because of that. I could have filed a complaint against that bank but for that, I need to come to Kerala often for it and it will be difficult for me as I was studying in Chennai.

In the Consumerdaddy website, I have noticed that XYZ bank has been rated below average in their consumer review and there is more number of criticisms on their product review page. Now, we all know about the standards of their customer service.
